5 a day: Make it a piece of cake
What does 5-a-day mean for children? Most people are familiar with the idea of eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day in order to maintain a balanced diet. For adults this is a fairly straightforward concept, with one "portion" being equal to an average size fruit or about 80g of vegetables. It can be more difficult to judge what the appropriate portion size for a baby or toddler, or a young child. The adult portion size applies from about age 6, but for a child younger than that the portion size is reduced to 40g for a 1-2 year old and 60g for a 3-5 year old. The list below demostrates what constitutes a "portion" for a 1-2 year old child: One 40g portion is approximately equal to: Broccoli and cauliflower 1 small floret Carrot 1 small carrot Red pepper 1 quarter Peas, beans and sweetcorn 2 tablespoons Tomato 4 cherry tomatoes or 1 medium sized one Apples and pears 1 quarter Dried apricots 3 whole dried fruit Banana 1 third Grapes 8 seedless grapes Mango 3 thin slices Of course, it's all very well knowing what a portion is: the real fun comes in trying to persuade your darling child to eat it. Sometimes no amount of cajoling can induce even a single pea to pass their lips. As a specialist organic children's food shop, Kiddies Kitchen wholeheartedly supports the five-a-day campaign but we also recognise the practical problems! That's why, as well as stocking fresh organic fruit and vegetables, we also sell a wide variety of 100% no added sugar snack bars and fruit smoothie pouches all of which are excellent ways to "sneak" a portion of fruit into your child's lunchbox. For a more substantial meal why not team some organic Scooby-Doo pasta shapes (scroll down to the end of the page) with a tasty and nutritious roasted vegetable sauce. This sauce (this recipe, along with many others, can be found on our website www.kiddieskitchen.co.uk), is packed with vegetables and is always popular on a cold winters day About Kiddies Kitchen Kiddies Kitchen is a specialist organic baby and children’s food shop located on Paddons Row, Tavistock. New products - Organix
Having just recovered from the arrival of Organix's new soft rusks I'm delighted to say that Kiddies Kitchen have our first delivery of 4 new Organix fruity desserts. Suitable for stage 2 weaning (from about 7 months) there are two oaty varieties and two fruit rice varieties. As usual with organix foods there are no additives, artificial flavourings, added colourings or added sugar just delicious pureed organically grown fruit, rice or oat flakes. These make a great addition to the organix range. By 7 months most babies are used to eating solid foods and therefore Organix include small lumps in their stage two desserts. These help baby develop the facial muscles that aid good chewing and speech development. You can see Kiddies Kitchen's full range of stage two organic weaning foods here. Who could resist apple & blackcurrant or apple & cinnamon fruity rice, or peach or banana fruity oats?
A genuine product endorsement
3 posts in one night - you can tell that there is nothing on TV! So, if you read the rest of blog you'll know that my second son is now about 6 weeks old and for the last two weeks my wife has been nagging me to post something on here saying how impressed she is with the Lilypadz nursing pads now in stock at Kiddies Kitchen. I know it sounds suspicious, but really they've been great. The only thing she has found is that she hasn't enjoyed wearing them at night because of the small amount of milk that can collect in the pad can drip out when taking off a pad at night in the dark, when sleepy etc etc. This has been a small point and easily solved by using Lansinoh disposable nursing pads at night. See - an honest and balanced critique of Lilypadz - thanks Mrs T. Overall verdict: overwhelmingly a great product and at £14.99 with free postage and packing from Kiddies Kitchen you can't go wrong.

Fruity Faces - As seen on Dragons Den!
Well, it just shows what a bit of publicity does for you! Always a good seller in our shop in Tavistock and on line at www.kiddieskitchen.co.uk Fruity Faces are inflatable fruit carriers, desinged to encourage children to take a piece of fruit to school. That all changed on Wednesday this week after their creator Paige Allen appeared on the BBC's Dragons Den programme. Despite failing to win an investment from the Dragons Paige's appearance has done wonders for sales of Fruity Faces and we now face a bit of a shortage - more should be arriving soon so bear with us.
